IBN,A*Star, Inks Agreement with NJC on the 22nd January

29th Jan 10

Since 2003, IBN’s Youth Research Program (YRP) has endeavored to foster an interest in research among young people and inspire them to pursue careers in biomedical sciences through a range of activities. IBN is the first research institute to establish an official partnership with SST, NUS High School, SP and NJC, to encourage continuing scientific education. This partnership also represents the first educational agreement between a research institute and a future school, a specialized independent secondary school, a polytechnic and a junior college.

IBN will cooperate with its four official partner schools to create greater awareness among their students of the impact of bioengineering and nanotechnology research. This academic tie-up will help develop students’ interest in scientific pursuits, through YRP outreach events such as open houses, science camps, seminars and career talks. YRP will also customize research attachment programs as part of the schools’ curriculum.

"NJC students will benefit first-hand from this dynamic partnership with IBN. We thank IBN for supporting us in creating distinctive and memorable learning experiences through science research for all NJCians," said Mrs. Virginia Cheng, Principal, NJC.

NJC offers an exclusive science research program called the STaR program to their outstanding Science students. Under this program, students are involved in advanced research and scientific projects using sophisticated instruments and equipment in their own South Zone Science and Technology Centre • Sigma Labs. They are also able to participate in full-time research attachments at renowned research institutes and institutes of higher learning. NJC also offers H3 Science Training and Research (H3-STaR) to academically able students who are inclined towards science research. Providing students with first-hand experience in research is a key focus of the YRP research attachment program. The MOU between IBN and NJC offers scope for more future collaborations.

Areas of collaboration include:
· Visits to IBN - NJC students and teachers would be able to visit IBN through its Open House platform.
· Research Attachment Opportunities - NJC students and teachers will participate in the YRP research attachment program.
· Research Talks and Seminars - NJC would invite IBN researchers to give talks on research for their students and teachers.
· Career Fairs - IBN will participate in the career fairs organized by NJC.
